Just Ducks: Nature Walk and Book Series

June 23, 2017 By Dani Wagner Leave a Comment

I know, I know… I’m sure you are all wondering when this series is going to end! I have to admit that I would keep going with it forever, but as summer has officially begun I will be changing to something more summer related starting in July! As for this week’s Nature Walk and Book series you are going to love Just Ducks by Nicola Davies. Just in case you missed last week, check out Over and Under the Pond.

Just Ducks follows a little girl through out her day in the city. She talks about how the ducks are the first thing she hears in the morning, where she sees them on her walk to school, and what they do throughout the year.

I love that there are tidbits of facts about ducks all throughout the story. Between the short bits of Nonfiction and the actual story your kids will learn all about duck body parts, how they eat, where and how they sleep, and so much more.

Just Ducks: Nature Walk & Book Series

Just Ducks Activities

  • Take a walk around a local pond and observe Mallard Ducks or any ducks that you can find.

  • One to One Rubber Duck Counting activity (check it out here)

  • Duck Feet Painting: Check out how to make these awesome duck feet to tape on and use to paint.

  • Duck Races: Place rubber ducks in a tub of water. Use a spray bottle to move the ducks across the pond.

  • Make homemade duck feed and discuss what it appropriate to feed ducks and what is not.

  • Discuss the difference between male and female ducks.  On your walk observe the kinds of ducks and try to identify which are male or female.

  • Draw pictures of the different places that birds sleep. See if you can find these places on your walk.

As always I would love to hear what you enjoyed most about this book or these activities! What other fun activities did you come up with in addition to these? Please let me know what summer book related activities you’d love to see.

Until next time,
