What do you miss by constantly going full throttle? It’s time to take pause.

February 22, 2017 By Dani Wagner Leave a Comment

When the twins were a little older than a year old we began to work with a Speech Therapist. During an initial meeting with our speech therapist, she began asking me all kinds of background questions. Most of which I answered with ease, some I fumbled through, and one in particular I sat dumbfounded.

It’s time to take pause.

As a mom, I will never forget that meeting. I will never forget not being able to answer questions about my own child. Things that I should easily have known or been able to recall.

At that point in my life I was in constant full throttle mode. I was always moving full speed ahead to the next event or the next item on my to-do list.

Back then it was wake up, get ready, drop kids off, go to work, pick kids up, come home, make dinner, clean up dinner, bath, bed, prep for next day, go to bed! All of which in an almost Tasmanian Devil state.

It was time to take pause.

Now three years later, I can honestly say that I am not as bad. Do I still have some soul-searching self-improvement work to do. ABSOLUTELY!

I know now that this time is precious and that every moment counts.

As I continue on this Hands Free Mama journey, I love the simple reminder to stop, take it all in,live in the moment, and make it count.

Take Pause

This month’s mission is to take pause! Not just take a deep breath kind of pause (although that’s always a good idea too), but really pause your life for a few hours, pause your routine for a few minutes, or put your day on hold.

With a full-time job, a work at home schedule, or a house full of kids to manage it’s not always feasible to just put your day on hold and drive into the country for some peace and quiet. What you can do though is find ways throughout your day or week to cut out things that you don’t really have to do.

Do you really have to finish washing those dishes instead of sending your kids out the door with a proper hug and goodbye?

Do you really have to attend every single social function you are invited to?

Do you really have to have to arrive 15 minutes early to that birthday party?

Sometimes we need to detour.

Instead of just yelling goodbye to your kids or spouse as they head out the door, make the time to send them on their way with your full attention.

Try cancelling a few social events and spend the day as a family hiking or playing in the park.

Instead of rushing to your next activity, stop and have a picnic or check out the new playground down the road.

Find ways to slow your roll and enjoy the simpler things in life.

Ways to Pause

Goals for this month:

  1. Embrace the wait
  2. Plan a do-nothing night once a week.
  3. Find ways to make life simple
  4. Give your kids and spouse a proper send off and welcome every day this month.

It’s time to take pause!

I may never forget that first meeting with the Speech Therapist, but I certainly won’t ever let it happen again.

In what ways can you take pause this month?

If you enjoy it, please pass it on:
