5 Reasons You NEED a Dance Break

February 19, 2016 By Dani Wagner 4 Comments

The girls and I are on a major dance kick and I absolutely LOVE IT!

Earlier in the year we would have a dance party just about everyday to either some of our favorite Sunday School jams or Nursery Rhyme songs. Recently, I found this amazing playlist of actual “dance” type songs for kids and we have been rocking nonstop.

5 Reasons You NEED a Dance Break

Gets you moving. If your kids are anything like mine, this is probably not an issue for you, but it’s still a nice change. True story, after dancing to all the songs on the playlist with the girls, my fit bit said that I climbed 14 flights of stairs and had been physically”active” for 20 minutes. Dancing is a great way to get in some physical activity if you are stuck inside due to snow, rain, or cold weather.

Promotes Listening Skills. A lot of the songs geared for young kids require them to listen. Just think about the Hokey Pokey or even songs like the Cha Cha Slide. So kids are toning up those MUCH needed listening skills while they are wiggling and giggling.

Great bonding activity. I spend all day everyday with my girls. We play, we go on adventures, we read books, etc but there is something about dancing that is just special. We laugh, giggle, sing, jump, and have a blast. It’s a great way to create memories, especially if it’s something your kids enjoy. The girls love it when daddy gets home and joins in on the fun. You just can’t put a price tag on that!

Encourages Learning. Along with working on listening skills, most of these dance songs for kids involve moving and body parts. So not only are they listening but they are reinforcing their understanding of their body parts and position words (in, out, up, down, under). Some songs talk about colors, shapes, animals sounds, and more.

It’s FUN! This is a no-brainer, unless you hate to dance! The sillier we are while dancing the better. There is no right or wrong way to dance to these songs and no judgement, just plain ol’ FUN! And moms looking to exercise more just think cardio dancing plus laughter….SO MANY CALORIES GONE!!!

If those five reasons can’t convince you to give dancing with your kids a try, maybe these amazing playlists or song suggestions will:

  • Our favorite playlist right now was created by Charlee at HumbleinaHeartbeat and includes almost 30 minutes of tunes for your little ones.
  • Brain Break Action Songs by the Learning Station has 62 songs in the playlist. So you can use them all or pick and choose your favorites.
  • Preschool Songs in Action by the Learning Station.

We don’t always dance for 20-30 minutes, sometimes we just do a couple of songs! I encourage you to try it out! We hope that you will love dancing as much as we do and if you know of any other songs please share!

Happy Dancing!

Dani

I love all these reasons to dance with the kids! True story, though, when I turn on our playlist and start dancing, I get exhausted after just a few songs. Probably ’cause I’m pregnant, I guess, but still, it makes me feel so old! Thanks for sharing my playlist and so glad you love it!
